The Omega 3/6 Alarm

Addressing the Omega-6 and Omega-3 Imbalance in the U.S. Food Supply
By Artemis P. Simopoulos, M.D., Ph.D. (Honorary) & Chip Paul

What if one of America's most important nutrition problems isn't simply what we're eating—but the balance of essential fatty acids in our food supply?

The Omega 3/6 Alarm examines the dramatic shift in dietary omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids, their relationship with human physiology and the Endocannabinoid System, and why the authors believe this imbalance deserves national attention.

Originally submitted to federal leadership as a call for action, the paper proposes research, education and policy initiatives aimed at bringing greater attention to omega-6 and omega-3 balance in the American food system.

MORE THAN A RESEARCH PAPER

A Call to Reexamine the American Food Supply

"; ; "; ; ";

In March 2025, Chip Paul and Dr. Artemis Simopoulos submitted Addressing the Omega-6 and Omega-3 Imbalance in the U.S. Food Supply to federal leadership, including the White House, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services and the Department of Defense.

Their message was direct: the balance between omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in the modern American diet deserves greater scientific, educational and policy attention.

The paper calls for a national assessment of omega-6 consumption and omega-3 intake, evidence-based recommendations, professional and public education, and greater examination of how America's food supply has changed.

INSIDE THE PAPER

Food. Fatty Acids. The ECS.
And the Bigger Picture.

Essential Fatty Acids

THE MODERN FOOD SUPPLY

Explore how changes in food production, processing, dietary oils and animal feeding practices have altered omega-6 and omega-3 intake.
The Endocannabinoid System

ESSENTIAL FATTY ACIDS

Follow the paper's discussion of LA, ALA, ARA, EPA and DHA—and the metabolic pathways connecting these essential fatty acids.
The Modern Diet

ENDOCANNABINOID SYSTEM

Explore the authors' discussion of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids as precursors involved in endocannabinoid biology and why dietary balance may matter to ECS signaling.
A Systems Perspective

A CALL
FOR CHANGE

Read the authors' proposal for research, professional education, public awareness and policy initiatives addressing omega-6 and omega-3 balance.
THE CONNECTION MOST PEOPLE MISS

What Do Omegas Have to Do With the Endocannabinoid System?

This is where the conversation becomes especially relevant to ECS Education Academy.

The paper describes omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids as precursors involved in the Endocannabinoid System and examines the complex relationship between dietary fatty acids and endocannabinoid signaling.

That connection illustrates one of the central ideas behind ECS Education Academy:

You cannot fully understand the ECS by studying cannabinoids alone.

Nutrition, cellular physiology, endogenous signaling and the broader biological environment all belong in the conversation.

ABOUT THE AUTHORS

Two Perspectives Behind
One Call for Action

The Omega 3/6 Alarm brings together Chip Paul's work exploring the Endocannabinoid System and systems biology with Dr. Artemis Simopoulos's extensive work in the field of omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids.

Their co-authored paper brings those perspectives together around a specific question: what are the consequences of the dramatic change in omega-6 and omega-3 balance in the American diet, and what should be done about it?

Dr. Artemis P. Simopoulos
Artemis P. Simopoulos, M.D. is a physician, endocrinologist, and internationally recognized authority on essential fatty acids. Her research at the National Institutes of Health focused on nutrition, genetics, endocrine disorders, and the role of omega-6 and omega-3 fatty acids in health, growth, and development.

She chaired the NIH Nutrition Coordinating Committee from 1978–1986 and later founded the Center for Genetics, Nutrition and Health in Washington, D.C. Dr. Simopoulos has authored or edited numerous books and published more than 370 scientific papers.
Chip Paul
Chip Paul is a researcher, educator, inventor, and co-founder of TrueMedX whose work has focused on the Endocannabinoid System for more than a decade. His systems-based research explores the relationship between the ECS, nutrition, cellular function, essential fatty acids, and whole-body physiology.

He is the inventor of a patented method for modulating the Endocannabinoid System and founder of ECS Education Academy, where his work is focused on expanding ECS education beyond cannabinoids to a broader understanding of human biology.

CONTINUE THE EDUCATION

Understanding the ECS Requires
Understanding the System.

One of the calls to action presented in The Omega 3/6 Alarm is greater professional education about essential fatty-acid balance and the Endocannabinoid System.

That's a conversation ECS Education Academy continues.

Our education goes beyond a cannabis-only understanding of the ECS to examine the system within the larger context of human physiology, nutrition, endogenous signaling, receptors, enzymes, cannabinoids, terpenes and cellular function.

We start with the system—not the intervention.
